Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need prior experience to start?
Not at all. Many of our members begin their journey with no martial arts background. Our instruction is thoughtfully structured to support beginners while continuing to challenge more experienced practitioners.
How do I get started?
The easiest way to get started is just to show up! We recommend checking out our schedule and selecting a class that works for your schedule. Arrive about 10-15 minutes early in order to sign a waiver and meet the instructor. If needed, we’ll get you fitted with a Gi for your first class if you do not have one. As always, feel free to give us a call or text at 706-564-1221 if you have any other questions or concerns!
Do you offer a free trial?
Yes. We invite prospective students to experience Augusta Jiu-Jitsu Academy firsthand with a complimentary trial class. It’s the best way to feel our culture, coaching quality, and training environment.
What should I wear to my first class?
Comfortable gym attire works perfectly — think shorts or leggings and a t-shirt. If you decide to train in the Gi, we have loaner gis available for new students.
What class formats do you offer?
We offer both Gi and No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes.
How long are classes?
Most classes run approximately one hour.
Do you have a kids’ program?
Yes. Our kids’ program typically starts at age 5–6, depending on the child’s readiness. Sometimes they are ready a bit sooner, and sometimes later. We invite you to bring your child in to watch or try a class to see if it’s something they’re interested in and ready for!
Do you offer women’s-only classes?
At this time we do not offer women’s-only classes. However, we pride ourselves on maintaining a safe, welcoming, and respectful environment for everyone. If there is enough interest in the future, it is something we would certainly consider.
Is competition required?
Not at all. Competition is completely optional. Some students choose to compete, while many train purely for fitness, self-defense, or enjoyment. We do encourage teammates to support one another at tournaments.
Do you allow drop-ins?
Yes — drop-ins are welcome. Contact us ahead of time so we can help you find the best class to attend. Be sure to arrive a few minutes ahead of class to meet the instructor and sign a waiver.
What membership options do you offer?
We offer month-to-month memberships that can be cancelled at any time.
We also provide the following discounts:
Family discounts
Paid-in-full discounts (6- or 12-month options)
Student, military, and first responder discounts
Discounts are not combinable.
Do you sell gear at the academy?
Yes- we carry t-shirts, gis, and rash guards onsite for your convenience.
